that has worked for me for many years.
Things needed:
-safety glasses
-work gloves if you're a sissy, the bolts and washers will get hot.
-dust mask.
-6" or bench grinder of your taste, make sure you have it bolted down to the work bench, mine isn't I was just touching up some pre-polished bolts.
-6" buffing wheels (I use one for polish and 1 for buffing) found at HD and Lowes.
-1"X1"X1' piece of Oak wood also found at HD and Lowes
-1' long bull pin or center punch (it has to be thick enough to hold the washers you want to polish close to the narrow tip.
-polishing/buffing compounds also found at HD and Lowes.Washer procedure:
insert one washer into the narrow end of the center punch, with the face of the washer and center punch pointing at an angle with an upward motion bring it close to the polishing wheel and turn as you go, do not force the washer hard into the polishing wheel, you can get hurt if the washer comes flying out. Bolt Procedure:
cut the piece of 1"X1"1' oak wood into small pieces long enough to use as handles, drill a hole and tap deep enough at each end of the wood to match the size of the bolts being polished making sure the bolts stick out about 1/4" at most.
Screw the bolt into the wood handles and polish away, follow the same safety procedures as the washers to prevent accidents.
